Remember that New Years resolution that you make every year
to be healthier? Chances are it didn’t last past February for many who made the
same resolution. In fact, living a healthier lifestyle is arguably one of the
most popular resolutions people tend to make when greeting the New Year. So, why
don’t more people stick to it? Well, as it turns out, we all know that fitness and nutrition are important to being healthy and happy, but putting it into practice
is not as easy. Here are some tips for making sure this next 2014 resolution
makes it to 2015 and beyond:
Goal-setting: Specific, and Realistic
Set a specific time for your workout, and hold yourself to
it. Make it something that is realistic, and remember no amount is too small. If
you really can only see yourself doing 5 minutes a day, that’s fine. Anything
is better than zero, and chances are you will increase the time when you’re
ready.
Daily reminders
Make sure you set some way to remind yourself of the goal
you set, it should be a standing appointment. Don’t let yourself “just forget”
about it!
Reward System: Non-food only!
You deserve a treat for being healthy! That doesn’t mean
something that will undo all of your work. Instead a movie, pedicure or massage
at the end of the week is a good idea!
Get suited up
Buy quality workout clothes and/or shoes. Not only will this
make your life easier, and working out more pleasant, but you also should see
this as an investment: your spending money in these things will be worth it
because of what will be gained. Plus, when you “suit up” in your new workout
clothes, it makes you feel more powerful! For some people, that is.
Start Slow
Don’t make a decision to start running 5 miles a day when
you currently run zero, there’s no way you will keep to that. Start slow, and
start small. That way you are more likely to keep it going, and also less
likely to hurt yourself from over-exertion by accident. Again, no amount is too
small – if 5 to 15 minutes is all you feel you can truly commit to, then that
is fine! Anything is better than nothing. The same goes with diet: you can’t
expect to throw out all junk food in one fell swoop, because it won’t stick. Instead
phase in more healthier foods and snacks slowly, whatever you can keep up with
over time. Remember, you’re in it for the long haul this year; you can do it!
